This year, Evita se Perron celebrates 30 glorious years of theatre, tart humour, towering\u00a0wigs\u00a0and timeless Swartland hospitality. And in true theatrical style, the iconic Darling institution is marking the occasion with an exciting new chapter: Swartland Kitchen has officially rebranded as Evita se Perron.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the words of Evita Bezuidenhout herself: \u201cIt\u2019s less of a makeover and more of a homecoming, darling!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For three decades, Evita se Perron has been far more than a theatre. Housed in the old Darling railway station, it has become a cultural landmark, a political pressure valve and a joyful gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Thousands of performances later, the venue has welcomed dignitaries and day-trippers in equal measure, delivering satire with bite and commentary with heart.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Founded by the inimitable Pieter-Dirk Uys and presided over by his most famous alter ego, Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout, Evita se Perron has become something of a national treasure. Here, laughter and insight have always shared the same stage, and democracy has been celebrated with wit,\u00a0warmth\u00a0and fearless honesty.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Two standout memories from Tannie Evita herself capture the magic:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cArchbishop Desmond Tutu was the patron of our community swimming pool. At the launch he stood with me, ready to cut the ribbons, and whispered: \u2018Tannie Evita, should I walk across the water now?\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then there was Finance Minister Trevor Manuel who brought the legendary\u00a0Rovos\u00a0Rail train to Darling with 20 African Ministers of Finance on board to visit me \u2013 the most \u2018famous white woman in South Africa.\u2019 Evita se Perron gave them an exclusive show. The party started at 6pm and the train left at midnight!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From the beginning, Evita se Perron has blended sharp political commentary with warm Swartland hospitality. Guests have come for the cabaret, the comedy and the commentary and stayed for the unmistakable sense of connection that lingers long after the curtain falls.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For many years, Swartland Kitchen operated alongside Evita se Perron, earning its own loyal following for its celebrated range of rusks, including Sunflower & Sesame, Buttermilk, Almond & Orange, Breakfast and Breakfast Reduced Sugar; as well as its beloved cookies with flavours such as Ginger,\u00a0Soetkoekies\u00a0and\u00a0Vlakoekies\u00a0and the much-loved Granola.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rebrand is a natural evolution, bringing everything under one iconic name while preserving the warmth, quality and artisanal integrity South Africans have come to love.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Says Evita se Perron\u2019s Frits van Ryneveld: \u201cThis year we are\u00a0very proud\u00a0to highlight this iconic tourism venue and museum, which celebrates the lifework of Pieter-Dirk Uys through his character Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout and 30 years of Evita se Perron.
