Having ground covers offers numerous benefits for your garden.\u00a0They help\u00a0suppress weeds, reduce erosion on slopes, regulate soil temperatures, and some varieties can even\u00a0improve soil quality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While many ground covers are resilient and can thrive in harsh growing conditions, such as areas with full sun and dry soil, environments that are overly damp and soggy can be tricky for certain ground covers.\u00a0These are some of the\u00a0ground cover plants\u00a0that are\u00a0sensitive to wet soil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creeping phlox<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Creeping phlox\u00a0is\u00a0a popular ground cover that\u00a0produces\u00a0tight masses of green leaves that give way to shades of pink, purple, and white, star-shaped flowers. If you plan to plant it in your garden, choose an area with full sun and well-draining soil, as creeping phlox does not tolerate wet soils.\u00a0These grounds\u00a0need\u00a0hot and dry conditions.\u00a0Plants will lose their leaves and stems and rot out from the middle of the plant\u00a0if in wet soils.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rosemary<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The rosemary plant is native to the Mediterranean\u00a0environment, meaning it is adapted to dry, rocky soil conditions and certainly\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0perform\u00a0well\u00a0in wet areas.\u00a0These plants are\u00a0highly sensitive\u00a0to poor\u00a0drainage\u00a0and wet soils, which cause root rot and impair nutrient uptake, often resulting in rapid decline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Russian sage<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

A ground cover that is known for its drought-tolerant, low-maintenance reputation. The Russian sage ground covers produce dense mat of silvery-blue foliage from summer straight to autumn making it an excellent choice for controlling soil erosion on slopes. <\/span>However, because it is adapted to arid environments and well-draining soils, avoid Russian sage in <\/span>wet<\/span> areas.<\/span> Excess moisture causes root suffocation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lavender<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Another Mediterranean native plant, perfect for arid climates, requires\u00a0excellent drainage to thrive. In wet soils, the roots are deprived of oxygen and become susceptible to root rot pathogens.\u00a0Prolonged moisture\u00a0will\u00a0lead to crown collapse and plant death, thus destroying your\u00a0lavender\u00a0ground covers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
