Autumn in South Africa is like a second spring in a way, especially for the Western provinces of the country. With the intense summer heat behind, some flowers begin to bloom in large numbers, filling gardens with flocks of beautiful birdlife. April is the best time of year to enjoy a rainbow of indigenous flowers in your garden.\u00a0From the famous Western\u00a0Fynbos, golden daisies and\u00a0star clusters are all April bloomers. <\/span>To get the most out of your garden in April,\u00a0<\/span>these are some<\/span> of the few<\/span> perennials to cut back.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bee balm<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Beautiful and aromatic, bee balms are\u00a0favourites\u00a0of\u00a0pollinators\u00a0and offer a\u00a0bright spot in any garden.\u00a0These perennials\u00a0benefit\u00a0greatly\u00a0from\u00a0an autumn pruning\u00a0session.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0best to shape up bee balm\u00a0plants around late April, just before the first winter frost arrives.\u00a0Cutting back helps\u00a0create\u00a0some\u00a0space\u00a0within the plants and\u00a0lets you add compost and mulch more easily\u00a0to warm them up during the colder months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Phlox<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The showy\u00a0phlox can bloom right till late autumn, but once they finish their\u00a0blooming,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0time to cut them back. Since phlox\u00a0groundcovers are\u00a0known for\u00a0their\u00a0powdery mildew issues,\u00a0they need the cutting to help them survive till their next blooming season.\u00a0Cutting back the stems removes any diseased,\u00a0discoloured, or damaged foliage from the plant, as well as its surroundings,\u00a0in turn decreasing\u00a0the risk of powdery mildew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sedum<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

A perennial autumn\u00a0favourite\u00a0for many gardeners. Sedum plants grow lovely leaves and blossoms that provide excellent late-season nectar for pollinators,\u00a0bringing\u00a0or rot<\/span>.\u00a0More<\/span>\u00a0pollinators\u00a0for\u00a0your garden in Autumn.\u00a0You\u00a0can\u00a0leave sedum undisturbed for some\u00a0winter garden\u00a0structure, but you can also trim the spent stems and foliage back down to ground level. This is\u00a0a\u00a0good idea\u00a0if\u00a0your\u00a0plant\u00a0is\u00a0showing\u00a0any signs\u00a0of late-season disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
