But before you\u00a0reach the warm,\u00a0cosy\u00a0stuff,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to make sure your home is ready to handle the cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Winter in South Africa varies,\u00a0from the icy mornings and dry Highveld air of Gauteng to the wet and windy winters in the Western Cape<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0but one<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> thing\u00a0remains\u00a0the same:\u00a0a well-prepared home means a warmer, safer, and more energy-efficient winter season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Insulation is everything<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Heat escapes easily through poorly insulated ceilings, walls, and even flooring. Start at the top \u2013 ceiling insulation is one of the most effective ways to\u00a0retain\u00a0warmth. Whether\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0using thermal blankets, eco-friendly insulation, or polystyrene boards, making this investment can reduce heating costs in your home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If full insulation\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0an option, focus on blocking draughts. Self-adhesive weather stripping, rubber seals, and foam tape are affordable fixes for doors and windows. Use draught excluders or rolled towels at the base of doors to keep icy air from seeping in.\u00a0Curtains also play\u00a0a big role.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Secure your windows and doors<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Windows and doors are often the biggest culprits when it comes to heat loss. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Older homes with wooden frames or single-glazed windows may <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">need<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">little extra care<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Use silicone caulk to seal gaps around window frames. Apply insulating film to the glass \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0invisible and adds an extra layer of insulation. Bathrooms and kitchens especially need airflow.
