There are many ways to create the illusion of a bigger garden. When trying to create the illusion of space, there are a few simple tricks that can be used to alter the appearance of the space. These visual tricks can easily create more depth and intrigue for your garden.

Choose the right plants

The right plant selection makes a garden. Choosing the right plants is crucial in making a small garden appear larger. Plants that grow upwards rather than outwards contribute to the illusion of more space by drawing the eye upwards. Drawing the eye upward creates more drama and a greater feeling of space.

Using colour wisely

On top of selecting the right plants, using colour wisely can also help create the illusion of space in your garden. Utilising colour effectively enhances the perception of space in your garden. Light colours can make the space feel larger as they reflect light and create a sense of openness. For a more harmonious look, group similar colours together for a more interesting feel.

Go big

Generally, the fussier the design, the smaller the space will feel. A clever trick to give the illusion of more space is opting for oversized patio plants. The larger they are, the more they help to create a seamless space. Tiny plants can look pathetic, drawing attention to the lack of space in your garden. A few well-placed large leafy plants will add depth. This will fool the eye by creating a false perspective of a large garden.

Use reflections

Mirrors or any reflective material can create an illusion of space by reflecting light around the surrounding plants. Just place the mirrors strategically so they reflect the most attractive parts of your garden, subtly hidden amongst the leaves for a more natural look. You need to be careful as mirrors can increase the sunlight and heat within the space of your garden, so don’t position mirrors too close as they can cause your plants to burn.

Create a focal point

A well-chosen focus point can draw the eye and make a garden appear larger. It could be a striking plant, a piece of garden art, or even a water feature. Position your focal point so it is visible from the main viewpoint, but not necessarily centrally placed.
